It's Cold Outside...

Which would naturally mean that you do all your winter training indoors in Wisconsin, right? Not so much. Swimming, obviously yes, I'm not breaking the ice to do a regular polar bear plunge, even with a wetsuit. Biking, normally, unless there is that exceptionally warm day, which can happen and I will welcome with open arms. Run, preferably not!
I prefer to run outside for SO MANY reasons. The most obvious reason being that you actually go somewhere! Face it, treadmills and elipticals don't GO anywhere and you really need to find yourself some great entertainment to survive workouts on them all winter long. Another reason, fresh air! Who wants to smell their sweat laden neighbor for an entire 10 mile run (when I get that far)? Definitely NOT me... I don't think anyone would want to smell me at that point either.
Today marks the beginning of my half marathon training. Just a nice little 2 mile diddy which, because of my tendency towards shin splints I'll probably walk a good portion of it. And I'll be doing this outside, bundled in my nice UnderArmor fleece and Zoot running tights, smart wool socks, fleece headband and gloves, and my iPod cranking out random and sometimes outrageous tunes.
I used to loathe being outside in the winter without insane amounts of warm clothing but I have now learned that my body will keep itself warm as long as I am moving and keeping my heart rate up, I just need to keep the moisture off my skin and all will be well!
I think I am going to start doing 'product reviews' of gear and things that I use that work (or don't work) for me. It'll help anyone just getting started to avoid some of the same gear mistakes I've made. I'll also intend it to be rather thrifty as I am doing triathlon on quite a strict budget - and I am able to succeed, and so can you!
Another day on my road to Iron has begun and I feel GREAT!

  1. Oh I so agree! I try to make sure I get at least one run outside in the winter, even if I have to go the Y track for the other ones. (I don't want to run after dark in the snow, so I only can do weekend runs outside until the show clears.) Enjoy!
